Where to Put an Air Purifier: Bedroom and Living Room Guide

Put an air purifier in the room you want to filter, on the surface specified by its manual, with an unobstructed intake and outlet. Choose a location that leaves the walking route clear and lets you use the controls and change filters easily. A hidden corner behind furniture is rarely a practical choice.
Start with the room where you spend time, then check the layout. A bedroom unit does not automatically clean a living room through a closed door. Placement helps a correctly sized purifier work as intended; it cannot compensate for inadequate capacity.
How much space should you leave around a Klarta purifier?
The Klarta US manuals recommend approximately 8 inches of free space on each side for Forste and Stor, with air inlets and outlets unblocked. See Forste section 3.3, page 21, and Stor section 3.3, page 22. These are model-specific instructions, not a universal rule for every brand.
Both are floor-standing appliances. Use a stable, dry, level location and keep the top outlet open. Space needed to remove a panel or filter is separate from normal operating clearance. Before settling on a spot, check both.
Bedroom example: beside the bed, with open airflow
Look for an open floor area near the sleeping zone that does not obstruct getting out of bed. Keep bedding and curtains away from the intake. Avoid wedging the unit between a nightstand and the wall, and do not place it under the bed.

You do not need to aim a draft at your face. If airflow feels uncomfortable, adjust the position while preserving clearance. For fan settings, light controls and overnight use, read our bedroom nighttime guide.
Living room example: outside the furniture gap
A spot beside the seating area can work if people can walk past without stepping over the cord. Put the unit in front of the furniture line rather than squeezed behind the sofa. Keep it away from a fireplace, heat sources, drinks and plant watering.

If the room opens directly to a dining area or kitchen, account for that connected space when choosing capacity. Use our room-size guide instead of treating each furniture zone as a separate enclosed room.
Should it go on the floor or on a table?
Follow the appliance's design. A tabletop cleaner and a floor-standing model are not interchangeable. For Klarta Forste and Stor, use the floor as directed in the US manuals. Raising a floor model onto unstable furniture adds a tipping risk and does not establish better filtration.
Can it sit near a window or doorway?
Only if the location meets the manual's requirements and does not block access, curtains or ventilation equipment. Keep it away from rain or condensation. During an outdoor smoke event, follow local advice about closed windows; moving a purifier beside an open window is not a substitute for reducing smoke entry.
A doorway is also a walking and escape route. Do not place the unit or cord where either blocks it. If you move the purifier between rooms, stop and unplug it as directed, then check the new position before restarting.
Five placement mistakes to avoid
- Behind curtains: fabric can obstruct airflow even if it looks clear when the curtains are open.
- Inside a cabinet: decorative concealment can restrict the air path.
- Under a table or shelf: check the outlet and overhead obstructions, not just the footprint.
- Beside water or heat: keep away from bowls, wet areas, heaters and direct humidifier output.
- Across a walkway: plan the cord route before plugging in.
A final check before you turn it on
Walk around the room, open nearby cabinet doors and let curtains hang normally. Check that the unit stays stable and the air path remains clear. Make sure filter packaging has been removed according to the setup instructions. Then choose a fan setting you can keep using.
