Running an Air Purifier overnight? - 9 Questions & Answers on How to Use | Klarta Air Purifier Best Practices and Safety at Night

Can you sleep with an air purifier on? Does the purifier need to be on all the time? At what distance from the bed should you place such a device? The rules for using an air purifier at night often come with users' doubts. The questions above are just a few of those we have received. Therefore, in this article, we have compiled the most important questions and answers regarding using an air purifier at night. Enjoy the reading!

9 most common questions about air purifiers at night

1. Can you sleep with an air purifier on?

Absolutely, and sometimes you should sleep with an air purifier on. It is highly recommended to sleep with an air purifier on when:

  • You live in an area with high smog levels (low emissions from single-family homes, proximity to factories operating 24/7).
  • You are allergic or asthmatic, especially during pollen season.
  • You recently bought a house and finishing materials emit volatile organic compounds, especially formaldehyde.
  • You are during or just after renovation – dust from walls, VOCs emitted by paints, or drying adhesives.

Using an air purifier has no side effects. The only undesirable effect could be a potential cold from placing the air purifier too close, with cooler air blowing on your sinuses or lymph nodes.

2. At what distance from the bed should you place the air purifier?

Place it so the airflow from the purifier does not blow directly on you or other household members. Immune system, breathing comfort, or sleep sensitivity are very individual matters, so it's hard to indicate a universal distance. Place the purifier between the bed and the main sources of pollutants like windows or doors.

It should not be placed directly next to walls or furniture that can block air intake and outlet. With this in mind, set the purifier at least 8 inches away from other surfaces.

3. Can you sleep with the purifier on? How loud are Klarta Forste and Klarta Stor?

Thanks to their intelligent automation, NIDEC brushless motors, and smooth speed changes, Klarta purifiers guarantee quiet operation. The frequency of the generated noise is also non-distracting for the ear. We particularly recommend using the carefully designed Auto Silent modes. They provide the best balance between low operating noise and cleaning efficiency optimal for most rooms.

  • Auto Silent mode for Klarta Forste: max. 36 dB(A)* and CADR of 120 m³/h
  • Auto Silent mode for Klarta Stor: max. 36 dB(A)* and CADR of 240 m³/h

*comparable to a quiet whisper or the sound of rustling leaves

In Auto Silent mode, Klarta purifiers smoothly adjust their speed, using the 3 lowest levels. Therefore, Auto Silent is not only suitable at night but also during work or relaxation. You can set Auto Silent mode in the Smart Life mobile app.

If you are looking for an even quieter solution, we recommend using Silent mode (equivalent to night mode).

4. What does Silent mode offer? Do Klarta air purifiers have a sleep mode?

Yes, Klarta air purifiers are equipped with a "Silent" mode. The devices then use the lowest speed, ensuring inaudible operation – about 20 dB(A)(hearing threshold) for Forste and 24 dB(A) for Stor. Additionally, you can turn off the main panel's backlight. Just remember that the lowest speed also reduces cleaning efficiency. CADR for Klarta Forste is then 60 m³/h, and for Klarta Stor, it is 150 m³/h.

5. Does the purifier need to be on all the time?

It doesn't have to be, but it's beneficial if it is. To ensure optimal protection against pollutants, the purifier should be on around the clock in the room. When set to auto mode, which we highly recommend using, it will mostly operate at lower speeds. Power consumption will then be minimal, and the noise virtually unnoticeable.

However, when pollution occurs, the Klarta air purifier can quickly adjust the appropriate speed to reduce the concentration of smog or allergens and then return to normal operation. It is estimated that even with closed windows, about 30-40% of outdoor pollutants enter the apartment. Therefore, it's worth having such a guardian nearby.

6. Can you completely turn off the control panel backlight on every Klarta air purifier?

Yes, in both Klarta Forste and Klarta Stor models, the control panel backlight can be turned off at any time.

If you own a Klarta Forste, hold the "Sleep" button for 3 seconds. The panel's backlight will turn off, but the "Silent" indicator will light up and turn off after 5 seconds. You can turn off the screen similarly in previous model generations.

If you own a Klarta Stor, press the "Sleep/Child Lock" button (marked with a moon icon). A single press activates the Backlight Off function for any mode, and two presses activate Sleep Mode.

7. Can you set a work schedule so the device turns on a specific mode (e.g., Silent) at a certain time and turns off at another time?

Absolutely. That's why we recommend using the Smart Life-Smart Living mobile app. Connecting Klarta air purifiers to the app gives you access to the full range of features, such as 8 speeds for Klarta Forste, 3 automatic modes, and most importantly, your own automations.

Automations are custom, personalized work rules created by you. Here, you can program the activation of a specific speed, function (e.g., ionization), or operating mode (e.g., Auto Silent) depending on pollution levels, temperature, humidity, and even time of day or user presence at home.

Example night air purifier automation:

If it’s 10:00 PM -> Turn on "Auto Silent" mode and turn on "air ionization"

If it’s 7:00 AM -> Turn on "Auto Normal" mode

8. Does the air purifier use a lot of electricity?

The maximum power consumption of air purifiers is similar to a standard light bulb, consuming several or dozens of watts. For Klarta air purifiers, it is respectively:

   - Klarta Forste – max. power consumption: 45 W

   - Klarta Stor – max. power consumption: 67 W

Remember that these are maximum values, reserved for the highest speeds and multiple functions running simultaneously. Most of the time, purifiers will use lower speeds, consuming a few to several watts (e.g., Klarta Stor uses only 14 W at speed level 4).

9. Is Klarta Forste a good choice for a bedroom? For what room size is the Klarta air purifier suitable?

With a cleaning efficiency (CADR) of 300 m³/h, the Klarta Forste  air purifier can handle rooms up to 430 ft². However, remember that these values are reserved for the highest speeds. In the recommended Auto Silent mode for bedrooms, the device's CADR is lower and amounts to 120 m³/h – just right for a room of about ~160 ft², which is the size of most standard bedrooms.

If your bedroom is larger, use Auto Normal mode, considering a slightly higher noise level (still low, reaching up to 50 dB), or choose the Klarta Stor, which guarantees a cleaning efficiency of nearly 300 m³/h in Auto Silent mode.
